What is LOVE? Baby don't hurt me...

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
love has always had a strange meaning to me. i love my family. i love my friends. and i have been in love with boyfriends and a fiance. but why does love leave such a bad taste in my mouth? since the age of 8, men who have claimed to love me have hurt me so incredibly bad. age 8, 15, 18, 21, recently at 22. how can i ever trust love again? how will i know that if i eventually let down my walls and let another man in to love me that i will be loved in return. and i mean really loved. not loved and then hurt like before.
they say "God is love."well quite frankly that scares the crap out of me!!! love has such a bad reputation and i am just now getting to know God and i read that. God is love. God is love? God is all those emotions i have felt before and all the pain i have experienced? love hurts and causes this actual physical ache. is that God?
i have had three boyfriends tell me they love me... and it hasn't ended good. these men have claimed to love me and then hurt me... badly!! i want to have the kind of love that exists in fairy tales and romance novels, the kind of love that fills the movies. does that still exist? or was it made up and created only to deceive young girls into terrible relationships hoping to find that love eventually. what the heck
where does this all come from you ask? well i am dating this new guy. YAHOO!!! and i REALLY like him, more than i have liked a guy in a while. it feels so good. he is such a sweetheart and a musician. double threat in my books. did i mention he has side burns... im a sucker for sweet rock stars with sideburns. well here's the catch. he says he loves me. he said it after two weeks. AHH!!!!! please don't let this be another one. another man who says he loves me and then hurts me.
prayer request: help me to love again. help me to trust love again. help me to believe in love. help me to be willing to accept love. help me to be able to recognize real love from hurtful love. love. love. love. "all you need is love"

I pray that this is the real deal and by that I mean a man who understands that love is not a feeling but a committment to those verses you quoted despite feelings or selfish ambition. I would also say as a friend who dearly loves you be leary of men who say such a big thing so quickly. Keep praying and asking god for direction

I second the sentiment. Be careful dear. Big words so soon sometimes means disaster's ahead.

Be careful... take your time, enjoy it and have fun. Don't take boys so seriously. :)

Hi! Nice to see you post again, and boy what a post!
What I've learned over the years is that the true love you're looking for doesn't happen overnight. True love is very hard work and takes time to mature.
I also fear that two weeks into the relationship is awfully quick to blurt out the "L" word, so use caution and don't put yourself in a situation to have your heart hurt again.
The majority of guys under the age of 25 have no clue to what "true love" really is, but they toss the word around thinking they do. Take time with this guy and enjoy the early stages of this relationship without the pressure of verbally expressing "love." If it's true then there isn't a rush...let time tell you who this guy really is. I just want to see you happy!! :)

You really want to test this 'love'? It's easy. Don't 'give it up'. Stay kind, affectionate, friendly, approachable, attractive, giving - BUT DON'T BE OVERLY PHYSICAL WITH HIM! Trust me I'm a guy this is the test. If he sticks around- you're golden.
